Treatment of CIN

Cone biopsy

This procedure is generally performed under a local anaesthetic, the procedure itself takes about 30 minutes. Cone biopsy is performed either by using a Laser beam to remove the abnormal cells, or, for more severe abnormalities, a scalpel is used to take to remove the abnormality.

Laser Ablation

As with the cone biopsy, this is usually done under local anaesthetic and uses the laser to vapourise the abnormal cells. This is done if the entire abnormality is visible and your doctor is satisfied there is no serious disease present.

LLETZ (Large loop excision of the transformation zone)

This method of removing the abnormal cells uses an electrical wire loop. This procedure is also performed under a local anaesthetic as an outpatient. This provides a small sample of tissue which is available to be sent to the laboratory for further analysis.

Following any one of these treatments, a follow up colposcopy is required in 4 to 6 months to check the healing of the cervix and another cervical smear.
